UNIVERSE INFRASTRUCTURE
![]() ![]() ADVANCED MEDICINE Medical practice in the UP is very advanced and most disease has been eradicated. Artificial organs are common, either via selective organ cloning or technological replacements. Artificial skin can be grown very quickly for burn grafts, genetic engineering for health issues is a frequent practice, and very severe traumas are survivable if medical intervention is close enough nearby, usually via the use of healing tanks. The only problem with the health systems in the UP is the over-reliance on robotic surgeons over organic ones. Whenever technology is downed, this means that there are very few people capable of performing surgeries. ![]() FTL SHIPS Faster-than-light travel is available through conventional star drives but this technology is very old and out of date and can take months or even years for travel between planets. Without the use of threshold gates, this is the only other option for FTL travel. ![]() HOLOGRAMS Hard-light Holograms are used very often in the UP, for simulations or disguises. They are able to emulate matter both visually and with texture, so that what they're emulating looks and feels like the real thing. Soft-light holograms are used often in many entertainment screens, video game units, and screen displays. ![]() INTERLAC Interlac is the Galactic Common language. It can be very difficult for some species to speak, as it's full of click consonants, but that's to allow species with mandibles and beaks to speak it. Translation devices like telepathic earplugs will allow the characters to speak and read it, though they may remove them if they want to try to learn to speak and read Interlac without assistance. ![]() NEWSLINKS AND MEDIA News programs and other media are far more interactive in the UP, merging internet browsing with visual media. Thus, news is presented in the newslinks, streaming video feed mixed with various links of interest that can pull up other videos or reading related to the news subject at hand. Many TV shows also use this format and are sometimes interactive (such as viewers being able to vote for endings of plots on shows). ![]() SCIENCE POLICE The Science Police are the UP's law enforcement branch. The Legion generally handles larger and more widescale threats than the Science Police but sometimes their investigations overlap, in which case usually the agency that first started one handles it until its completion, with the two cooperating by sharing information. Occasionally, the Science Police and the Legion handle a threat together at the same time. All criminals that the Legion arrests and all evidence they've gathered is handed over to the Science Police. If a crime scene is accessible by the Science Police and not something that happened in the reaches of space or in a dangerous area, the Legion secures it so SP forensics examiners can search it. Aside from a general role in investigating crimes and arresting criminals, the Science Police also heavily work to prevent the out of control use of dangerous technology. For this reason, Brainiac 5 is generally consistently at the top of their collective shitlist. Officer Shvaughn Erin acts as a liaison between the Legion and the Science Police, making sure that intel about criminals is shared between them and coordinating their investigations, undercover work, and sting operations so both organizations avoid accidentally obstructing each other's operations. Legionnaires also submit reports about events of their missions to her so she can file them with the SP to use in criminal investigations. Officers of the Science Police all have varying opinions of the Legion. Some Science Police officers respect that the Legion has a mandate by the government to do what they do, hold them in high regard because they sometimes save the lives of Scicops during especially dangerous situations, and feel that the Legionnaires typically try their best to cooperate with the SP. However, most Science Police officers feel the Legion isn't held to the same level of accountability they are, especially given their frequently overlooked tendency to flip the UP Council the bird. That said, most Scicops still at least respect the courage of the Legionnaires (generally regarding some of what they do as downright suicidal) and are generally sympathetic to the team about the members that went missing a year before. (Another reason Brainiac 5 is on their collective shitlist, due to his device being responsible for them seemingly being vaporized). ![]() TERRAFORMING Terraforming technology is available in the UP, although there are tight regulations on its use as it's only legal to use it on certain types of planets, so as not to destroy the development of semi-sentient species. This technology can transform a planet to be habitable in anywhere from months to a few years, depending on its makeup when it's first found. ![]() THRESHOLD GATES Threshold gates are the main form of travel in the UP. They open up portals that pass through odd parts of dimensional space (D-space) and require Kwai navigators for people to successfully find their way through to the other side. People can travel through them by foot in threshold hubs, so that they step right onto another planet, or massive gates can be opened to allow ships to travel through. ![]() TIME TRAVEL Time travel is possible in the Legion's universe though it has heavy legal restrictions (most forms of it are illegal due to the risks to the timeline). On the planet Talus is the Time Institute, which studies the nature of spacetime and the theoretical principles of time travel. ![]() TITANET The Titanet is a massive communications tower on Titan, staffed with telepaths, that acts as a major communications hub for the planets of the UP. Only telepaths with perfect background checks are allowed to work there due to the sensitive messages often passing through. ![]() WEATHER CONTROL All planets have weather control systems (Climate-con stations) that allow them to control the weather however they see fit, leaving most worlds with balmy, pleasant weather, and regularly scheduled precipitation days. |
